Ticket for a lottery to be held in Paterson, New Jersey, to benefit the "Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures, erected by Virtue of an Act of the Legislature of the State of New-Jersey. -- Subject to a Deduction of 15 per Cent." Printed by John Woods. Illegible signature.
Woods was a printer in Newark, New Jersey. Alexander Hamilton was a founder and backer of the Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures established in 1791 as a manufacturer of textiles. It was the first business corporation formed in New Jersey. Operations were suspended briefly in 1796, but continued in various endeavors into the twentieth century at mills in Paterson, New Jersey, and other areas.
