Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

States "United States of America to Savanah Billingsley & Livingston Brien." Possibly a list of items lost or damaged during military looting, possibly a supply inventory or request. Lists corn, fodder, cattle, sheep, bacon, and other items. Refers to the destruction of bushels of green corn, cotton, sweet potatoes, and several other crops.
