At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Edited by Thomas Jefferson Randolph. Second edition. Published in Boston by Gray and Bowen. Signed by Hamilton Fish. This was the first of several attempts to replicate Thomas Jefferson's correspondence. Volumes 1 and 4 are mis-identified on the spine as the other. Quarter leather with marbled paper.
