At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Elmore, Confederate Treasurer, discusses the activities of G. W. Butler, a late Teller in the Treasury. Informs Poindexter, a Lieutenant and Enlistment Officer, that Treasury clerks have had little time to work on Butler's accounts. States that several million Treasury notes related to these accounts are held in Columbia, South Carolina, and have been shipped to Richmond based on the request of George Alfred Trenholm, Confederate Secretary of the Treasury. States that due to the busy condition of the Treasury, he can offer no estimate regarding the settlement of Butler's accounts. Contains several areas of discoloration, possibly due to tape, and a sticker on the top of page two. Written on Treasury of the Confederate States stationery.
