Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Handwritten table of contents at front. Inside front cover has a pasted piece of paper that says: "Col. Alex. J. Perry, Division C.C. and G. Equipage Quatermaster's Department, Washington, D.C." Contains 217 printed orders for the War Department in 1862. Cloth cover. Front and back covers are detached. One of the orders is signed by General Lorenzo Thomas.
