Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One newspaper issue of Public ledger, dated May 15, 1865. Reports the capture of Jefferson Davis on 10 May 1865 in Georgia. Also contains an article on the Abraham Lincoln assassination trial, local news, financial news, and stories from New York and Europe, as well as many advertisements and announcements.

Childs was the editor of the Public Ledger.
