Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Battle of Mill Creek" dated 1862. Depicts combat between Confederate and Union forces during the Battle of Mill Creek, January 19, 1862. In the foreground a Union solider rips a confederate flag from the grasp of a wounded confederate. Engraved from an original painting by Alonzo Chappel in possession of the publishers at time of engraving.
