At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled, "Battle of Chicamauga-Lt. Van Pelt Defending his battery" dated 1864. Depicts Lieutenant Van Pelt preparing to battle approaching Confederate forces at the Battle of Chicamauga, September 10-18, 1863. Engraved after an original painting by Thomas Nast in possession of the publishers at time of engraving. Engraver unknown.
