Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Bombardment of Fort Fisher (Landing of the Troops)" dated 1865. Depicts Union troops landing, unopposed, on the beach outside Fort Fisher, January 13, 1865. Union soliders on the beach appear patient as they wait for fellow soliders to arrive by boat. Engraved from the original painting by Alonzo Chappel in possession of the publishers at time of engraving. Engraver unknown.
