Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Castle of Chinon, Indre-Et-Loir" circa 1861-1877. Depicts a distant view of the Castle of Chinon. In the forefront of the image two figures on horseback play trumpets as they cross a bridge, leaving the city. Engraved by S. Fisher after a drawing by T. Allom.
