Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Elias Boudinot was President of the Continental Congress from 1782-1783, later Congressman from New Jersey and Director of the Mint. Served as Commisary General for Prisoners early in the American Revolution.
Lewis Pintard was a famous merchant and was one of the incorporators of the Chamber of Commerce established by George III in 1770. He was an agent for American prisoners during the American revolution.
