Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"A meeting of the Citizens of Annapolis...for...considering the propriety, of offering a memorial to Congress for the establishment of a Navy yard at this place...Resolved...to take immediate steps to have the harbour of this City, the creeks around it, and the shoal on the outside of its entrance, surveyed by scientific and competent engineers." Signed by Somerville Pinkney, chairman of the committee. List of committee members, including a former Annapolis mayor.
