Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Will write quickly; the mail goes out in half an hour. Does not feel "in the best mood." At about 8:00 AM on the 21st, the Rebels attacked the army's pickets. The entire army scrambled into fighting position "as soon as possible." His company was marshaled into the skirmishers line. A few members of his company were mortally wounded. Was on picket duty when the Confederates attacked. Did not know Johnny Banks was wounded until he rejoined the company the day after the attack. "We fell back to this place and they followed us up closely all the time a fighting our rear guard of cavalry." Pratt will lose his leg. Banks' wound "has cast a deep gloom over our company." Banks had been his roommate for some time. The regiment sustained 20 casualties during the attack. Bridgman arrived here from City Point yesterday.
