Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A collection of letters and quotations sent to George Driver by his family and friends. Most of the items are bible quotes or poems from his mother Susan and sister Susie. Possibly all sent to Driver during an expedition to Zanzibar that he participated in. One letter from Eli Thayer discusses the expedition in detail.
