Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One greeting card from Richard and Ethel Shirer to Paul H. and Margaret Lobik dated August 28, 1943. An anniversary card featuring a wedding bell surrounded by flowers. The bell is made of lace which shows an image of a house surrounded by flowers that is on the inside of the cars when closed.
