At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A letter to the Director of Dependents Claims Services at the Veterans Administration, in which Cordelia Williams explains that when she initially filled out the form to claim LeRoi's life insurance, she stated that she recieved no allotment from any other soldier, but now she receives a small allotment on behalf of her son James, who is currently serving in the military. The header of the document notes that this is a copy of the letter.
