At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lucy Addison High School commencement exercises for the graduating class of 1934. One side of reverse is the program for the graduation. The other side of reverse is the list of graduates. Virginia Lucylle Williams is listed as one of the graduates.

Born Virginia L. Williams in 1918. She attended Lucy Addison High School and the Hampton Institute. She married Booker Kent sometime before 1943, as she is listed as Mrs. Booker Kent in LeRoi’s obituary. They had two daughters, Diane and Dolores. She taught at Bates High School in Annapolis, Maryland, probably from 1943 to 1945, before she and her husband moved to Washington, D.C. There, she worked as a teacher and assistant principal in the Washington D.C. public school system. She died of cancer on March 17, 1987.
