At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter addressed to Roseann from William E. Johnson dated January 28, 1976. Pertains to the "Selling Skills" program is enrolled in. He remarks that his and Roseann's stock has earned them one hundred dollars and suggests it may be best to sell if they can determine if the "correction in the market is imminent." He writes about the stock market's activity including Xerox's performance. Concludes by stating his tomorrows are filled "with such happiness" knowing he will be seeing Roseann again soon.
