At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter addressed to Roseann from William E. Johnson dated February 8, 1976. Bill writes that he watched "Mutiny on the Bounty" this evening. He is spending time at his parents' house in Maryland and writes about his dinner and the family that surrounds him. After everyone leaves for the night, he is glad to have time to himself. He writes that he wants to go home and is excited that in one week's time he will be able to do so.
