Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Robert Winemiller to Leonard Graeff, dated October 10, 1943. Robert writes that he had a letter from Eleanor recently. She met up with Emma and commented that he uses the same moves on all the girls. He took the Officer Candidate School exam but doesn't think he did well. Robert signs as Fuzz.
