Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Mrs. E.M. Stouffer to Leonard Eugene Graeff dated December 16, 1943. Stouffer writes that she is predicting a solemn Christmas as all the soldiers are away. She updates Leonard on Wayne Stouffer who is in Ireland. Wayne sent her a card with his picture. She sent Wayne a bracelet like Leonard's.
