Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Dottie Erickson to Leonard Eugene Graeff dated January 6, 1944. Dottie inquires about Leonard's new rank and wonders how promotions work in the Navy. She updates him on a few friends; Ray surprised everyone and is home on leave; Lee Hoover entered the Navy and is stationed at Camp Peary, Virginia is a SeaBee. She also mentions going bowling and writes that she isn't very good at it.
