At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One newspaper clipping from Great Lakes Bulletin dated January 16, 1944. Clipping contains a view of a ship that is nearly ready to be commissioned as a training model. The full scale replica of a ship's forward section will be used by the sailors at Great Lakes that are training to be signalmen and quartermasters. According to Leonard's letter (GLC09611.225.01) the building behind the ship is where he has mechanical drawing classes.
