Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from June Walter to Leonard Eugene Graeff dated January 20, 1944. June apologizes for not writing sooner she was visiting Earnie in Newport News VIrginia. She had a great time visiting. On the way there a marine took care of her bag took her to dinner and showed her around Washington D.C. on the way back a Master Sergeant kept her company. She is glad to hear Leonard hopes to be home around March 11th and reminds him to visit her. She also updates Leonard on friends from home; Paul Brown is visiting home and expects to be sent "across." Donnie Alsedeck is home, Fuzz (Robert Winemiller) is in Hollywood area, Ed and Ses are dating still, Jim Fuibles is "across," and Pamaine Shomaker is engaged to Jack, and Dick Arnold is dating D.J. Karr.
