Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Leonard Eugene Graeff to Susan Prowell Graeff and Raymond James Graeff dated August 26, 1944. He received multiple cards and letters; two from this parents one from June, one from Mrs. Shoemaker, and one from Doris Bixler. He has been very busy, he went on liberty and picked up his pictures, and got more taken. He also went to two movies, a baseball game, and a party at the Breakers in Waikiki. The party was organized by the U.S.O. He is sorry to hear about Joe and his mother. (GLC09611.355) He also updates them on Dottie Erickson and Lillian Hogentogle. He thanks them for checking his bank account. He is sad to hear about Edith's broken leg.
