Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Leonard Eugene Graeff to Susan Prowell Graeff and Raymond James Graeff dated September 27, 1944. Mentions the change in weather from summer to fall and reminisces about home. Also mentions the accident he was in seven years ago, and how the scars from it no longer make him self-conscious. Mentions the possibility that Charles is hurt or possibly dead but does not give a last name. He also mentions some girls that he has been writing including, Ann a WAVE who he met while he was in Chicago, and that he has not received a letter from Marion in a long time.
