Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One newspaper clipping sent by Leonard Eugene Graeff to Susan Prowell Graeff and Raymond James Graeff dated August 15, 1945. The clipping is from the first page of the Honolulu Advertiser. It includes the masthead and an image with caption. The image is features a celebration that took place in Pearl Harbor when news was announced of the Japanese surrender on August 13, 1945. The celebration was the shooting of flares around Fleet landing.
