Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One trading card from the Red Menace collection, "20. 'Big Mo' in Action" illustrating pistons firing from a battle ship. Naval officers aboard depicted covering their ears. Center of image is a large explosion. Reverse side contains propaganda narrative mentioning the battleship "Missouri" from the 7th Fleet noted for carrying "one-ton shells from its nine 16-in guns." Text compliments that the manpower from the battleship was responsibile for keeping communist soldiers at bay.

USS Missouri (BB-63), otherwise known as "Big Mo" is a U.S. Navy battleship used prominently during the Korean War. It was previously featured in the Pacific Theater of World War II at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The battleship was ordered to the Korean peninsula by President Eisenhower after a surprise invasion in 1950.
