Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One trading card from the Red Menace collection, "43. Huk Raiders" depicting soldiers engaging in combat in tall grass. One soldier shoots another soldier from a distance. Aside from him are two soldiers fighting hand-to-hand combat. Reverse side contains propaganda narrative describing a group of communists in the Philippines known as the Huks. Text describes the terrain where battles take place and where Huks reside. "Their hideouts are in grass seven feet high."

The Hukbalalahap Rebellion was initially retaliation against Japanese occupation in the Philippines in 1942. Rebels consisted of peasant farmers who fought through guerrilla warfare.
