At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One report entitled, "The Communist Party" by Pettis Perry, dated April 1953. Item is a transcipt of a speech by Pettis Perry to a jury on January 12, 1953. The case involved Perry, who was accused of his involvement with the Communist Party of USA. Perry acted as his own counsel defending his involvement with the party and it's alignment with civil rights for African Americans.
