At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One telephoto entitled, "They March in Peace" dated April 7, 1968 taken by Associated Press. Depicts a large crowd of people marching. At the front of the line is a framed portrait of Martin Luther King Jr., carried by protestors. Typed notes attached to the image states the number of those in attendance of the march, which took place in Newark's Central Ward.
