At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Frank B. White to L. Jean White dated December 31, 1944. Sent care of Fleet Post Office in San Francisco, California. Mentions a letter from Jean in which she describes trying to put together a Japanese 99 light machine gun that he had sent home as a souvenir. He spends most of the letter describing how to put the gun back together and includes a diagram of the weapon as a visual aid.
