At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One menu from Frank B. White to L. Jean White dated August 2, 1944. Sent care of Fleet Post Office in San Francisco California. Lists breakfast, dinner, and supper and notes that for five complete rations the contents of the box as well as the can goods marked "2nd Half of 5 Rations" must be used.
