At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One sketch from Frank B. White to L. Jean White dated September 21, 1944. Sent care of Fleet Post Office in San Francisco California. A sketch described by Frank as "filthy" features a man and woman sitting on a couch a cat walks under the woman's legs and the cat's tail is going up her skirt. The man looks on in confusion and surprise at what is happening.
