At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One booklet entitled Pocket Guide to West Africa dated 1943. The guide features fifteen sections concerning West Africa and what service men will be surrounded by during their time there. The sections are; Introduction, Who and What You Will See, The Value of Good Will, The Country, Early History, French West Africa, British West Africa, Portuguese Guinea, Liberia, A Long Way From Gay Broadway, How Africans Live, How to Make Friends, Rules for Health, Things to Do and Not to Do, and The Most Important Tribes. There is also a map of the coastline and the French and English portions of West Africa, as well as images of African people and villages.
