At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Gerald Handy to Donna Lawyer dated April 8, 1969. He writes how much he loves her and wants to marry her. He comments that he will change her mind on beauty school as she will be his wife. Handy also updates her on friends and promises to watch what he writes her. He also insists on getting married as soon as he returns and not waiting till 1970. He addresses the letter to Donna Handy despite their not being married.
