Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Prints correspondence from President John Adams, dated 22 August 1781 from Amsterdam, discussing the constitution of the Netherlands. Contains an article on woolen manufactures. Also has a large announcement of the procession of an upcoming Fourth of July celebration. Contains other news items and many advertisements.
