At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

I am sorry that it is not of the Power of this Department to comply with your Request, in having a Remittance made to you at this time, the sum appointed for the last year's expenses under the Treaty of Ghent being exhausted. - When another appropriation is made, no time will be lost in complying with your Request.
