At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Nicolay was President Abraham Lincoln's private secretary, a diplomat, and a Marshall of the U.S. Supreme Court. He wrote the book, Abraham Lincoln: A History, with John Hay. Smith was a widely known philanthropist and social reformer who ran for President in 1848. He used some of his money to set up communities of freed black enslaved people.
