Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses an ongoing land dispute between Button Gwinnett and himself. Houstoun was a lawyer in Savannah, Georgia.

Houstoun was a Georgia delegate to the Continental Congress in 1775 and governor of Georgia in 1778 and 1784. Gwinnett was also a Georgia delegate to the Continental Congress in 1776 and a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
