Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Hand colored lithograph published by Currier & Ives at 152 Nassau Street, New York. Caption under title reads: "Gallant charge of the Zouaves and defeat of the rebel Black Horse Calvary." J.E.B. Stuart's 1st Virginia Calvary was known as the Black Horse Calvary. Despite the caption's claim, Stuart's calvary were considered the victors in this engagement, routing the New York infantry. Print is mounted.
