Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The letter is written on blue air mail paper with postage from England, addressed to Spokane, WA and the return address is Paris, France. Nellie describes the events and lectures she is participating in, primarly connected with the Methodist church. She outlines her tourist plans for the next days and comments her roommate stays up late, but she is able to sleep through it. Below the "Nellie Joe" signature, another text portion is dated July 2 and signed "Bye, bye- Mom". In this portion she complains Rod has not written nor has he answered her phone calls. She specifies she will be arriving in Paris on July 6 at 5 a.m.
