At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Title continues: "containing a compendium of intelligence pertaining to the upbuilding of the Kingdom of God, and the signs of the times, together with a great variety of useful information, in regard to the doctrines, history, principles, persecutions, murder of the prophets, at Carthage, and the onward progress of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints." One of six volumes of the official Mormon newspaper published in Illinois from 1839 to 1846. This volume contains detailed information about the early history of the Church, troubles in Illinois and Missouri, the murders of Joseph and Hyrum Smith, and the preparations for the move to Utah.
