At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Concerns the cession of Sioux land, their removal, and the remuneration they will receive. Authorized by President James Buchanan. Treaty arranged by Charles E. Mix, Commissioner on the part of the United States, and the Siseeton and Wahpaton leaders on 19 June 1858 (and ratified on 21 March 1859).
