Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Pettit, acting as Assistant Quarter Master General, responds to the request of Colonel Clement Biddle, former Commissioner General of Forage, for the profits of his office since 2 March 1778, when General Nathanael Greene became Quarter Master General. Provides a detailed calculation of Biddle profits from commissions.
Provides an example of the form and acceptability of war-profiteering during the American Revolution.
