Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A compilation of the official papers of the government and the edited transcription of the journal written by exile Samuel Fisher and others about the Philadelphia Quakers who were exiled to Virginia in 1777 and 1778. Gilpin was a son of one of the exiles.
