Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

First nine pages contain letters to and from Archer (1856/5/19-1857/9/19). Log entries begin on 19 May 1856 and include his voyage aboard the U.S.S. Roanoke (1857/4/17 - 1857/9/16) and his cruise to the East Indies aboard the U.S.S. Powhatan (1857/12/7 - 1858/12/15). A list of letters written and received appears toward the end of the book. Burgundy leather spine; tan, blue and red dotted boards. The Opium Wars took place 1839-1842 and 1856-1860, both ending with treaties that opened certain Chinese ports to foreign trade.
