At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Miller writes to his wife: "every thing is quiet here But a good deal of escitement [sic] about the recent defeat of Genl Banks [struck: defeat] in the [Shenandoah] valley and i have no doubt the excitement was not small in Gettysburg it was Rather a sad affair, who is the fault of it we have not Been able to learn yet, But a great many of the men here Blames Genl Mcdowell whether it is him or not i am unable to say, But one thing i can say [2] the feeling is any thing But good Between him and the Reserve Corps." Praises General John F. Reynolds. Writes, "i do not think dear Lile that the Recent defeat of Banks was any great draw Back on our arms although it will Be a sollem knell to many a heart..." Calls Fredericksburg a "secession hole."
