Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Marked "copy." Writes, "The General desires you will, on receipt of this, direct Mr. Frothingham, after leaving a conductor with you at Burlington, to repair immediately with the remaining conductors and clerks in his department to this place. They must make as much dispatch as possible, as the situation of the ordnance and stores in this quarter renders it necessary for them to be here."
