At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Countersigned by Samuel Adams, a hospital surgeon. Certifies that soldiers in the general hospital are "so reduced by Sickness as totally to disqualify them for any Kind of military Duty & in our Opinion they will continue in that situation thro' the Winter. we do therefore recommend them as proper Subjects for a Discharge."
